Hospital Struggles to Meet Needs of Young Cancer Patients

Young cancer patients at the Princess Margaret Hospital for Children are suffering in wake of shortage of oncologists at the facility. It emerged that two of the oncologists at the hospital are presently on leave.

It is learnt that the oncologists present at the facility had to work for longer hours to cover the shortfalls. However, sometimes that doesn't help much as treatments had to be cancelled. Parents of the children at the facility are blaming that the hospital is even falling short of the basic furniture.

It had inadequate number of chairs for them to sleep as they are present with their children while they are being treated, they argue. However, Kim Hames, the West Australian Health Minister, has denied the claims saying that there was no quick solution to shortage of doctors.

He affirmed that while the facility provided world class care standards, it was under pressure. "That's because of those two specialists leaving, but I've certainly been aware of pressure on the ward and we've been putting in extra resources to fix that", he added.

Further, he said that he will meet the doctors at the facility to discuss the concerns as he was not aware that situation has gone so difficult. Data suggests that about 600 children in Australia are diagnosed with cancer every year.
