LONDON (AP) ? J.K. Rowling and Hugh Grant are among the celebrities accusing the British government of letting down the victims of media hacking. They want lawmakers to back new measures to rein in Britain's unruly press.

Legislators are due to vote Monday on rival plans for tougher controls in the wake of the country's phone-hacking scandal.

The Conservative-led government says it will propose a new press watchdog, but hacking victims say the regulator must be backed by an act of Parliament.

"Harry Potter" author Rowling ? who has spoken of the media's impact on her family ? said Sunday that she and other victims felt they "have been hung out to dry" by the government.

Grant said hacking victims would support plans by the Liberal Democrats and Labour for stronger media measures.

All Critics (80) | Top Critics (28) | Fresh (74) | Rotten (6)

A cunning and richly enjoyable combination of high-stakes drama and media satire from Chilean director Pablo Larrain.

A mesmerizing, realistic and often hilarious look at the politics of power and the power of ideas ...

A political drama, a personal drama, a sharp-eyed study of how the media manipulate us from all sides, No reels and ricochets with emotional force.

It's a funny look at the way the media warp public opinion, and a curiously hopeful one.

On every level, "No" leaves one with bittersweet feelings about democracy, love and the cost of compromise.

If you can shake off the inherent grossness of mining the Pinochet years for yet another Mad Man-style deification of zeitgeist-grasping salesmen, this is moderately interesting stuff.

No continually impresses for its slyness and savvy -- rarely has such an eyesore been so worth watching.

Larrain fashions an unlikely crowd-pleaser from a historical episode that has its share of tragedy as well as triumph.

Stirring as a celebration of voter empowerment, No may also inspire pangs of wistful nostalgia.

Fascinating work from director Pablo Larrain and screenwriter Pedro Peirano, who manage to slip into the skin of a beleaguered country and detail the urgency of a revolution, sold one jingle at a time.

Swims upstream against high-definition with a defiantly lo-fi approach that's also ingeniously evocative of the historical period.

Wildly colorful strokes, full of bitter humor.

It's a fascinating and surprisingly fun look behind the scenes of politics and media.

An Oscar-nominated win for more than just political junkies.

A worthy and a quite interesting slice of modern international history ...

(AP) ? Erik Murphy scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds to help the 13th-ranked Florida Gators take the first step Friday toward trying to add a Southeastern Conference tournament title to their regular season championship by beating LSU 80-58.

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive presented Florida coach Billy Donovan with the regular season trophy before tipoff. Then the Gators (25-6) started working toward their first tournament title since 2007 when they wrapped up a three-peat. They will play either Tennessee or Alabama in the semifinals Saturday.

Scottie Wilbekin added 16 points, matching his career-best with four 3-pointers. Michael Frazier II had 11 and Patric Young 10 for Florida.

Ninth-seeded LSU (19-12) tried to keep up with the rested Gators but looked a step slow with too many shots just short a day after beating Georgia to advance.

Charles Carmouche led the Tigers with 14 points.

Florida dominated LSU with a 47-27 edge on the boards and easily outshot the Tigers as the Gators hit better from 3-point range (11 of 20, 55 percent) than they did overall (29 of 57, 50.9 percent). LSU shot 33.3 percent (18 of 54).

The Gators missed their last 11 shots in losing at Kentucky to wrap up the regular season for their third straight road loss in SEC play. They had no such problems against LSU, especially not with Murphy scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the first 22 minutes. They led 43-28 at halftime and pushed that lead to as much as 35 when Murphy scored seven straight points, the last with 8:41 left for a 73-38 lead.

Murphy got Florida going as he scored in the opening minute, and the Gators hit five of their first eight shots. They did just about everything they wanted whether it was driving to the basket or hitting from outside. Even when they did miss, they usually got the rebound for second and third chances.

LSU led twice, the last at 5-4 on a layup by Johnny O'Bryant III. Rosario answered with a layup with 18:02 to go putting the Gators ahead to stay at 6-5. Murphy followed with his own layup and then a 3-pointer. The Tigers stayed close with Carmouche hitting his first three shots all behind the arc, the third coming midway through the half to pull LSU within 18-17.

Wilbekin hit a jumper, then stole the ball feeding Frazier for a bucket. Wilbekin then capped a 9-0 spurt with a 3 pushing Florida's lead to double digits. With O'Bryant going 1 of 5 in the half, the Tigers struggled to score inside and settled for too many jumpers. O'Bryant finished with eight points.

The final seconds summed up the first half. The Tigers dribbled looking for a final shot that Hickey bounced off the rim, then Frazier beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer giving the Gators their biggest lead at 43-28 at halftime.

In the second half, the Gators even worked out the final kink in their game hitting their first four free throws as the nation's top team in scoring margin just kept pushing the lead bigger. LSU managed a quick late flurry whittling down the final score but never got closer than 22 in the final minute.

Wash. students: Pot more popular than cigarettes

SEATTLE (AP) -- Washington high school students who participated in a statewide survey say they are twice as likely to smoke marijuana as cigarettes, and the state's top health official said Thursday she's worried that a new marijuana law may make prevention efforts more difficult.

High school smoking has decreased significantly across the state, with cigarette smoking down in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12, but the number of high school students who believe using marijuana is risky is also at a low point, health officials said after releasing the 2012 survey results.

More than half of 10th graders said it is easy to get marijuana and about 19 percent said they smoked marijuana within 30 days of the survey. About 27 percent of 12th graders said they smoked pot.

More than 200,000 youth took the voluntary and anonymous survey in October.

In November, Washington and Colorado voters legalized marijuana possession for adults over 21. Possession remains illegal for youth.

Washington Health Secretary Mary Selecky expressed concern that marijuana prevention efforts aren't ready to ramp up in response to the new state law.

"As the perception of harm goes down, use goes up," she said.

Some of Washington's anticipated tax revenue from sales of marijuana at state licensed stores will be devoted to youth prevention education. But Selecky said marijuana stores are expected to open before new money for prevention efforts flows to the state. She noted that the state has worked hard to keep tobacco out of the hands of minors by making it illegal for anyone under 19 to buy cigarettes, but kids are still getting their hands on tobacco.

Washington already does some youth drug prevention, but to get the results seen in smoking prevention, they will need to increase their efforts significantly, Selecky said.

"We have our work cut out for us," she said.

A University of Washington researcher who supported the new marijuana law said it's a big improvement over prohibition alone, since the government has done a lousy job of educating young people about marijuana.

"More adolescents reducing their use of tobacco is an indicator, as I see it, of the effectiveness of well-funded, science-based education," said Roger Roffman, a professor emeritus of social work and a therapist in private practice. "If that can work with tobacco, why wouldn't it work with regard to marijuana?"

He expects this public health effort, which was not included in the Colorado law, will be more effective in preventing harm, and encouraging healthy decisions than prohibition.

The healthy youth survey conducted in 2012 also found that fewer students are using alcohol, compared with 2010. About 23 percent of students in 10th grade reported drinking alcohol over the previous 30 days, compared with 28 percent in 2010. That number peaked at 45 percent in 1999. The 12th grade numbers dropped from 40 percent in 2010 to 36 percent in 2012.

The Healthy Youth Survey is taken every two years by students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12, in more than 1,000 public schools in Washington.

Pope Francis reaches out to Jews

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Like his predecessor, Pope Francis reached out to Rome's Jewish community at the very start of his pontificate, pledging to continue to strengthen the increasingly close ties between Catholics and Jews.

Just hours after he was elected the first Latin American pope in history, Francis sent a letter to Rome's chief Rabbi Riccardo di Segni, saying he hoped to "contribute to the progress that relations between Jews and Catholics" have seen since the 1962-1965 Second Vatican Council.

In an interview Friday with The Associated Press, di Segni said the dialogue between Catholicism and Judaism was "complicated" but added that the new pope's background "gives me trust and hope" that relations will continue to improve.

Other Jewish leaders welcomed the election of a pontiff seen as an ally when he was archbishop of Buenos Aires. Israeli President Shimon Peres said Francis would be a "welcome guest in the Holy Land" while Ronald Lauder, the president of the World Jewish Congress, said the new pope "always had an open ear for our concerns."

"By choosing such an experienced man, someone who is known for his open-mindedness, the cardinals have sent an important signal to the world," Lauder said. "I am sure that Pope Francis I will continue to be a man of dialogue, a man who is able to build bridges with other faiths."

Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, as he was known before he became pope, showed as Buenos Aires archbishop an inclination to expand interfaith outreach to Islam and Judaism, and made efforts to further close the nearly 1,000-year estrangement with the Orthodox churches.

He was widely praised for his aid to Buenos Aires' Jewish community following the 1994 bombing of a Jewish Center that killed 85 people. Iran has been blamed for the attack, but denied any links. A joint Argentine-Iranian "truth commission" is studying the evidence.

"We hope that his word and his example contribute to the achievement of harmony, brotherhood and peace among all peoples," the Italian Rabbinical Assembly said, pledging to do its part to foster dialogue between Jews and Catholics "with mutual respect for their respective identities."

Francis' predecessors, John Paul II and Benedict XVI, worked toward reconciliation between Catholics and Jews during their papacies.

Benedict's first official act as pope was a letter to Rome's Jewish community and he became the second pope in history, after John Paul, to enter a synagogue. However, he met harsh criticism when he lifted the excommunication of a bishop who turned out to be a Holocaust-denier.

Lauder said the World Jewish Congress, which represents Jewish communities in 100 countries, is convinced that Francis will "speak out against all forms of anti-Semitism both within and without the Catholic Church, that he will take action against clerics who deny or belittle the Holocaust and that he will strengthen the Vatican's relations with Israel."

Samsung Galaxy S 4 preview: a flagship with some familiar roots

Samsung Galaxy S 4 preview TKTKTK

You say you want a revolution? Too bad, because this Galaxy smartphone update is just that... an update. Samsung's newly unveiled Galaxy S 4 is an incremental step up, an evolution less "inspired by nature" and more by last year's GS III. Don't believe us? Just take a look at the two handsets side by side to see the overtly obvious heritage. Samsung's staying the course with the overall design language, though it's expanded the screen size to five inches -- now powered by a Full HD Super AMOLED display with 441 ppi (and yes, it's still PenTile).

On the inside, it has a processor setup that we're told will be either an Exynos 5 or Snapdragon depending on the region, along with 2GB of RAM, 16, 32 or 64GB of internal storage, a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 2,600mAh battery. Starting to see the bigger picture here? Samsung had a good thing on its hands with the GS III and it's not willing to compromise much of the tried-and-true with the GS 4. It will launch globally in Q2, with a stateside debut on T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular and Cricket. Until then, join us past the break for our detailed first impressions.

(AP) ? The road from the military academy where Hugo Chavez's body has been lying in state to the hilltop museum where he'll be displayed indefinitely is lined with some of the most dangerous slums on the planet. It runs under bridges in dire need of repair and past grocery stores with no groceries.

Tens of thousands of Venezuelans gathered along that route Friday to watch the late president's body cross the city in yet another choreographed show designed to keep Chavez supporters in thrall, at least until an April 14 election scheduled to replace him. Then, the banners and sound systems will be put away, and people will have to go on living in the dysfunctional country Chavez has left them.

This tense, relentlessly gray capital embodies many of Venezuela's problems, with crumbling apartment towers and food lines often sharing the same sidewalk with cheering crowds eager to greet their departed Comandante.

"More than anything, the government continues fighting with everyone, and does everything badly," said Francisco Olivero, a 54-year-old carpenter who lives with his wife and five children in the poor neighborhood of Catia, just blocks from the funeral route.

Like many Venezuelans, Olivero said wartime-levels of street violence all over the city were his top worry.

"They kill people here every day," he said. "I've lost friends, relatives."

Even as thousands of bused-in police academy cadets gathered along the route, Olivero and his wife Yelitza Acuna were hiding from the sun while waiting in a block-long line to buy flour, coffee, butter and other food staples that they said have been hard to come by for about two years.

The store, which sat along the most trafficked part of the route, happened to be selling the raregoods that day, drawing a crowd of people desperate for a few bags of flour.

"The word spread in the street, and we all came running here," said Oliver's wife, Yelitza Acuna, a cook's assistant.

Economists say government-imposed price controls designed to dampen inflation topping 20 percent have made it impossible for store owners to sell basic foods at a profit, sparking widespread shortages. For their part, officials have accused suppliers of hoarding the goods and have invaded warehouses looking for sugar, flour and other food items in short supply.

"You can't find anything," said 27-year-old lawyer Anglys Bericote, who rode a bus for four hours from the town of Cajigal to view the funeral cortege. Wearing a heart-shaped "I am Chavez" pin, she said she was taking the opportunity to also stock up on basic goods. People in her town have even had to go without toothpaste and toilet paper, she said.

"It's all the plan of the private businesses," she said, repeating the government's line of attack. "They want to hold onto everything so that it riles up people."

A few blocks from the military museum, where a ceremonial fire awaited the arrival of Chavez's body, Jonathan Rodriguez watched government supporters pass by in red T-shirts bearing Chavez's image. Raw sewage trickled from a broken pipe down the street, and the 37-year-old insurance agent scolded his two sons for playing nearby.

"The majority of them don't complain about the problems here," Rodriguez whispered about the passing Chavez supporters. "It's as if they didn't exist."

Rodriguez said he doesn't have that luxury. Violent crime is so bad in his part of town that he and his family shut themselves inside their home every night by 6 p.m., only opening the?iron gate?covering his front door?the next morning. Yet for Rodriguez, staying indoors might not be enough to protect him and his family from the war outside. Several weeks ago, a stray bullet penetrated the zinc roof of a neighbor's house.

Almost all of Caracas' streets empty of people by dusk as residents live under the pall of a homicide rate 20 times that of the United States. On Thursday, the U.N. Development Programme issued a study finding Venezuela had the world's fourth highest homicide rate, only behind Honduras, El Salvador and the Ivory Coast.

Rodriguez blamed his working-class neighborhood's ills on thugs who prowl the streets on motorcycles and called for more police patrols.

Many, however, believe the police are a big part of the problem. In an astounding revelation, former Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami said in 2009 that police were responsible for up to 20 percent of the country's crimes.

"I just stay inside now," Rodriguez said. "Outside, it's not safe."

All along the funeral route are unmistakable signs that this 28 million-person country is not only unsafe, but that its basic services no longer work.

The hills around the military academy are covered with bare-brick slums that rise almost vertically into the Caribbean sky. More Venezuelans have moved into such slums during Chavez's government, casualties of a housing deficit that the human rights group Provea estimates at 2 million units. Official figures show the number of houses deemed "inadequate" in the country grew from 295,000 in 1999 to more than 404,000 in 2011.

The growth of such neighborhoods has contributed to other problems. Due to crumbling or inexistent infrastructure, sewage all over the city goes mainly to one place: the once-pristine Guaire River, which runs along most of Chavez's funeral route.

In 2005, Chavez had famously promised that Venezuelans would one day be able to swim in its waters. Trying to do that Friday would be nothing less than life-threatening.

Retired truck driver Miguel Mosquera said he remembered the idyllic scene there decades ago, when the river was a perfect place to spend a sunny day.

He lives in the neighborhood of San Antonio, close to the river and within sight of the funeral route.

"The city grew too much," the 67-year-old said. "In the '30s and in the '40s, people bathed in this river. ... Here, when it rains, it's chaos, you see that the river sometimes spills over when it rains."

Jose Leal, who had stopped by a bakery near the route, said he had given up on any change under the current government, led by Chavez's hand-picked successor Nicolas Maduro.

"It isn't easy, brother," Leal said as Chavez supporters headed to the river to watch the cortege pass. "It's worrying. It creates stress, stress in the family, stress at work."

Tavernier Internet business raided by IRS, FDLE | KeysNews.com

Internal Revenue Service agents, backed by numerous officers from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, raided Gulf Internet Services in Tavernier Wednesday morning.

State and federal agents raid Gulf Internet offices Wednesday morning in Islamorada and Marathon.Though visibly marketing itself as a fee-for-Internet use business that offers copy, faxing and printing services, Gulf Internet also offers slot machine-like gambling. The Tavernier office had more than 60 computers linked to online slot games.

Search warrants were issued Monday for 51 internet cafe locations in Florida and elsewhere linked to Allied Veterans of the World, a non-profit that operates the cafes. Warrants were issued for Gulf Internet's locations in Marathon and Stock Island, as well as in Tavernier.

The raid came hours before Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and officials from other state and federal agencies planned to hold a press conference to discuss the status of an investigation into Allied Veterans of the World.

Florida Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carrol resigned Monday, the same day FDLE officers interviewed her about her involvement with Allied Veterans of the World.

Michelle Obama Spills Relationship Deets In Vogue & Barack ...

michelle obama vogue april 2013 cover beyonce barack(1)

We already showed you First Lady Michelle Obama gracing April?s cover of Vogue and now we get to hear more about her presidential love!

In her casual and candid interview with the mag, Michelle and President Obama both opened up about their relationship and how they manage to keep things together!

So just what is it about the prez that drew Michelle to him?? Well, for one, it was his laid back personality and his way of handling situations!

Michelle explained:

?The most you get from him is ?You know, that is gonna be tough. . . .? There are a lot of times I can?t tell how his day went. Unless I really dig down. Because when he walks through that door, he can let go of it all. And it just doesn?t penetrate his soul. And that?s the beautiful thing for me to see as his wife."

And it sounds like Michelle has been learning some of Barack?s chill tactics, as well!

Mz. Obama spilled:

?Patience and calm I?m borrowing. Or trying to mirror. I?ve learned that from my husband, that sort of, you know, ability to not get too high or too low with changes and bumps in the road . . . to do more breathing in and just going with it. I?m learning that every day.?

As for how they've remained humble and haven?t changed who they are, despite their presidential status?

Michelle stated:

?My mother doesn?t do interviews. but let me tell you: She is not long on pretense. She?s the first one to remind us who we are. And it?s been very helpful having her living with us. . . . We can check reality against her sensibilities.?

Barack also revealed that his wife has made him a better person, stating:

?What Michelle has done is to remind me every day of the virtues of order. Being on time. Hanging up your clothes. Being intentional about planning time with your kids.

There?s no doubt I?m a better man having spent time with Michelle. I would never say that Michelle?s a better woman, but I will say she?s a little more patient.?

The prez then went on to state:

?Michelle?s like Beyonc? in that song, ?Let me upgrade ya!? She upgraded me.?

What better way to flatter your wife than to compare her to Queen Bey! Adorbz! We LOVE it!

It?s so refreshing to see a first couple who breaks down the barriers and are able to gush about their love and just be themselves!

  • But, in-store mobile payments nearly quadrupled last year:?eMarketer has?estimated?in-store mobile payments as adding up to $640 million in transaction volume in the U.S., up from $170 million in 2011. However, this figure does not include swipes on mobile credit card readers like Square and PayPal Here, only consumer-side mobile payments.
  • Card readers are building up real scale: Square's mobile payments volume rose to $10 billion in 2012, up from $2 billion in 2011. Starbucks is?switching its credit and debit card processing to Square, and as of January 2013?accepts the "Square Wallet" app at 7,000 locations.?The?Starbucks alliance with Square?is evidence of how the card reader-based approach has already worked its way deep into the U.S. consumer economy.
  • Mobile payments as part of mobile commerce are also exploding: PayPal processed some $14 billion in mobile payments last year,?evidence of?mobile catching on as a transactional platform.??PayPal hopes to build a merchant-powered network?based on the ubiquity of PayPal as a payment and money transfer platform. PayPal users are already?able to pay?at thousands of traditional stores by keying in their mobile number and a PayPal PIN selected online (or in their PayPal app). PayPal is?expanding?the program this year,?in part through an alliance with Discover.?

DESCRIPTION

In today's competitive and highly dynamic environment, analyzing data to understand how the business is performing and to predict outcomes and trends has become critical. The traditional approach to reporting is no longer adequate. Instead users now demand easy-to-use intelligent platforms and applications capable of analyzing real-time data to provide insight and actionable information at the right time. The end goal is to support better and timelier decision making, enabled by the availability of up-to-date, high quality information.

Although there has been progress in this direction and many companies are introducing products towards meeting this goal, there is still a long way to go. In particular, the whole lifecycle of business intelligence requires innovative techniques and methodologies capable of dealing with the requirements imposed by these new generation of BI applications. From the capture of real-time business data to the transformation and delivery of actionable information, all the stages of the Business Intelligence (BI) cycle call for new algorithms and paradigms to support value-added functionalities. These functionalities include dynamic integration of real-time data feeds from operational sources, optimization and evolution of ETL transformations and analytical models, and dynamic generation of adaptive real-time dashboards, just to name a few.

The series of BIRTE workshops, starting in 2006, have always been held in conjunction with VLDB. The series aims to provide a forum to discuss topics related to this emerging field and set research directions towards making business intelligence more real-time. Following the success of previous BIRTE editions (2006, 2008-2012) submissions for research, industrial and position papers on relevant topics are encouraged.

Study shows how one insect got its wings

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

Scientists have delved deeper into the evolutionary history of the fruit fly than ever before to reveal the genetic activity that led to the development of wings ? a key to the insect's ability to survive.

The wings themselves are common research models for this and other species' appendages. But until now, scientists did not know how the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, first sprouted tiny buds that became flat wings.

A cluster of only 20 or so cells present in the fruit fly's first day of larval life was analyzed to connect a gene known to be active in the embryo and the gene that triggers the growth of wings.

Researchers determined that the known embryonic gene, called Dpp, sends the first signal to launch the activation of a gene called vn. That signal alone is dramatic, because it crosses cell layers.

The activation of vn lasts just long enough to turn on a target gene that combines with more signals to activate genes responsible for cell growth and completion of wing development.

"Our work shows how when you add a gene into the equation, you get a wing. The clue is that one growth factor, Dpp, turns on another growth factor, vn, but just for a short period of time. You absolutely need a pulse of this activity to turn on yet another gene cascade that gives you a wing, but if vn is active for too long, a wing wouldn't form," said Amanda Simcox, professor of molecular genetics at The Ohio State University and lead author of the study.

"We learned all this from investigating 20 tiny cells. The events could be responsible for this big event in evolutionary history, when the insect got its wing. With the wing, if its environment turned bad, the insect could fly off, giving it an advantage."

Within about five days, those 20 cells give rise to a 50,000-cell fully developed wing.

Simcox and colleagues aren't yet certain that Dpp's activation of vn explains how all insects got their wings because of differences in the ways these invertebrates develop.

The research is published this week in the online early edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Simcox began the analysis on a fruit fly larva that had recently hatched from the egg. She identified a tiny sac of cells representing where a future wing would be that was attached to the body cavity through tubing that runs the length of the larval body. Simcox dissected those sacs away from the body to study them specifically.

By staining the cell sacs with substances that light up target genes, the researchers then made images of the sequence of genetic events they observed. It all started with Dpp, part of a family of genes known as bone morphogenetic protein genes that are well understood in developmental biology.

The analysis showed that Dpp sent its signal from one cell layer to the other across the gap in the middle of the sac to activate the vn gene. The mechanism allowing the genes to talk to each other across that gap remains a mystery, Simcox noted.

"But it's the only explanation because if we took away the function of Dpp, vn doesn't get turned on," she said.

Dpp's activation of vn is the critical step in turning on its target, the Egfr signaling pathway, which sets off a series of gene activations that drive wing development ? specifically, activating genes called ap and iro-C. But vn also has the ability to regulate itself through a feedback loop so it stays on for longer in some cells where it is also needed for making the body of the fly at the location of the wing's attachment.

In addition to imaging the genes' activity, the researchers zoomed in on the gene structure to identify the binding sites that enabled the gene signaling to occur. When they mutated the binding sites, the signals were disabled.

"We had genetic evidence linking the events, tracing it back earlier than anyone had ever seen, and we showed directly through analysis of the binding sites that if they were mutated this expression went away," Simcox said. "We have good lines of evidence that there really is a connection."

From here, she and colleagues plan to investigate how other insects develop their wings.

Protein abundant in cancerous cells causes DNA 'supercoiling'

Mar. 11, 2013 ? A team of USC scientists has identified a protein that can change DNA topology, making DNA twist up into a so-called "supercoil."

The finding provides new insight about the role of the protein -- known as mini-chromosome maintenance (MCM) -- in cancer cells, which have high levels of MCM.

Think about twisting one end of a rubber band while holding the other end still. After a few turns, it forms a neatly twisted rope. But if you keep on turning, the twisted band will twist back upon itself into an increasingly coiled-up knot. Similarly, a DNA molecule can be twisted and coiled to varying extents to form different "supercoiled" structures.

Chromosomal DNA forms different supercoiled structures to enable a number of important processes. It turns on or off some genes, while tuning up or down other genes. The study suggests that an overabundance of MCM in a cell may allow certain genes to be overexpressed, and tune down or turn off other important genes, causing the cell to grow out of control and become cancerous.

Chromosomal DNA structure is very important for regulating gene expression of a cell, and thus the physiological status of the cell. Changing DNA topology is one effective way of controlling chromosomal DNA structure. The discovery of MCM's ability to change DNA topology offers a totally new perspective to MCM's role in gene regulation and cancer," said Xiaojiang Chen, professor of molecular biology at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, and corresponding author of the study.

Chen worked with fellow USC professor Susan Forsburg and USC graduate students Ian M. Slaymaker, Yang Fu and Nimna Ranatunga; as well as Daniel B. Toso and Z. Hong Zhou of UCLA and Aaron Brewster of UC Berkeley. Their study was published online by Nucleic Acids Research on Jan. 29.

Chen and his team found that MCM proteins form a filament that looks much like a wide tube, through which the DNA strand spirals its way along the inner tube wall. Inside of the tube is a wide spiral path that has a strong positive electrical charge.

"Such a striking feature is unusual," said Chen. Who is also a member of the USC Norris Cancer Center. "When you see that, you know it must have a special function." Indeed, it turns out that the positively charged spiral path attracts and binds to the DNA strand, which has a negatively charged phosphate backbone.

Holding the DNA tightly to the spiral path inside the helical filament tube causes the DNA double-helix to change structure, creating supercoils. Future research by the team will explore how the DNA topology changes caused by MCM impacts cancer cell formation as well as its utility in cancer therapy.

This research was funded by the National Institutes of Health, grant numbers GM080338, AI055926, GM071940 and GM059321.

HBT: No?bans?for Canada, Mexico? |? Fight night

According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports, World Baseball Classic officials have decided that no players will be further disciplined for the benches-clearing brawl that broke out Saturday between Team Canada and Team Mexico. The fight brought seven ejections, but that?s as far as the punishment will go.

?We are extremely disappointed in the bench-clearing incident that marred the conclusion of today?s game between Canada and Mexico,? reads a written statement released early Sunday morning by World Baseball Classic, Inc. ?The episode runs counter to the spirit of sportsmanship and respectful competition for which the World Baseball Classic has stood throughout its history.?After communicating with both the Mexican and Canadian baseball federations this evening, we are aware of the perspectives held by both sides in a competitive environment.? Nevertheless, we relayed to both teams that such an altercation is inappropriate under any circumstances and has no place in baseball.?Because at least one club ? and potentially both ? will not advance to the second round, WBCI has determined that disciplinary measures would not have a meaningful corrective impact.? Thus, discipline will not be imposed beyond today?s seven game ejections.? It is our firm expectation that the members of Team Mexico, Team Canada and all the tournament?s participating teams will learn from this incident and set a better example ? one that befits the sport they share ? in the future.?

It?s great news for Mexican third baseman Luis Cruz, who incited the entire fracas when he directed teammate Arnold Leon to plunk Canada?s Rene Tosoni after Chris Robinson?s successful ninth-inning bunt single. Cruz, who is expected to open the 2013 season as the Dodgers? starting third baseman, also threw the first punch when the two teams rushed toward each other. A suspension that would bleed into regular-season MLB games seemed likely for him. But here we are.

Canada (1-1) plays Team USA (1-1) today at 4 p.m. ET in Arizona. The winner of that game will advance out of Pool D along with Team Italy (2-1). Mexico (1-2) has already been eliminated and has no games remaining.

Cybersecurity threatens US-China relations: WH official

Carolyn Kaster / AP file

National security adviser Tom Donilon speaks during the daily news briefing at the White House in Washington on Thursday, May 17, 2012.

By Andrew Rafferty, Staff Writer, NBC News

?

Chinese leaders must address cybersecurity threats emanating from their country on ?an unprecedented scale? or risk weakening the economic relationship between Beijing and the United States, White House national security adviser Tom Donilon said Monday.

?U.S. businesses are speaking out about their serious concerns about sophisticated, targeted theft of confidential business information and proprietary technologies through cyberintrusions emanating from China on an unprecedented scale,? said Donilon.? ?The international community cannot afford to tolerate such activity from any country.?

The remarks, delivered to The Asia Society in New York, are the first by a White House official to specifically name China as a threat to U.S. cybersecurity.

Though Donilon focused mainly on the danger to U.S. businesses, he did acknowledge the risk such an attack could pose to U.S. national security.? He said that the issue has become ?a key point of concern and discussion with China at all levels of our governments? and that President Barack Obama has vowed to do what is necessary to protect America?s interests against cyberattacks. ?

During last month?s State of the Union address, Obama highlighted how vulnerable America?s financial institutions, power grid and air traffic control systems could be to an attack.? The president, who has signed an executive order to help address those concerns, called on Congress to pass comprehensive legislation that would better secure online networks to help protect against attacks.

The president never mentioned China during his high-profile address.

But on Monday, Donilon was much more direct, detailing three requests for Beijing, including recognition of the severity of the problem, ?serious steps? to address it and establishing guidelines of acceptable norms in the digital realm. ??

?Both countries face risks when it comes to protecting personal data and communications, financial transactions, critical infrastructure, or the intellectual property and trade secrets that are so vital to innovation and economic growth,? said Donilon.

James Lewis, a cybersecurity expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said Donilon?s remarks indicate an aggressive shift in how the administration deals with China. It is a pivot, Lewis said, that comes as more and more data pours in pointing to China as the biggest culprit behind cyberattacks.

?The atmosphere has just changed; the data is overwhelming,? he said.

Lewis said protecting digital institutions is more diplomatically framed as an economic issue instead of a security one to avoid stirring threats of military action. Still it is significant the debut of the administration?s sterner policy came from the president?s top security adviser, he said. ??

A report released in February by a private security firm that found a Chinese military unit hacked more than 140 businesses, mostly inside the United States.? It?s a claim the Chinese government denies.

Media giants The New York Times and Wall Street Journal say they had been hacked for months and through an investigation with the FBI, traced the intrusions back to China.? The Wall Street Journal said the hacking was aimed at monitoring the newspaper?s China reporting, a claim that the spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry called ?irresponsible.?

White House spokesman Jay Carney said cybersecurity will be one of the priorities the president addresses with congressional leaders when he visits Capitol Hill this week.

And the United States is not alone. European countries have suspected China has infiltrated their computer systems as well.? Nations could retaliate with sanctions against Beijing.

?It?s become a problem that China can?t ignore without harming their economy,? said Lewis.

Pakistan arrests members of anti-Christian mob, but convictions rare

Christians and civil society activists across Pakistan took to the roads on Sunday demanding government protection for the rising persecution of religious minority communities which make up less than five percent of the country.

The protests come a day after hundreds of Muslims rampaged inside a Lahore neighborhood of at least 50 Christian homes. The rioters apparently were outraged over accusations that a local Christian from the area had committed blasphemy. The accused blasphemer had already been arrested the night before, and the Christians in the area fled the same night in expectation of violence.

The police have arrested dozens in connection to the rioting. But campaigners for religious minorities here note that arrests after past incidents have almost never led to punishments, and the blasphemy law that enables communal unrest remain on the books.

?This current government passed many constitutional amendments during the last five year but did not touch the blasphemy law, even though everyone in the parliament was on board for the revisions in the constitution,? says Nadeem Anthony, a lawyer in Lahore who defends those facing a possible death sentence under the law.

RECOMMENDED: How much do you know about Pakistan? Take this quiz.

Three of Mr. Anthony?s relatives living in the Lahore neighborhood were displaced by the destruction.

?Instead of protecting them and their homes, the police told the Christians to flee from the area,? claims Anthony who visited the Lahore locality on Sunday with his relatives from the area.

Many locals corroborate this saying that despite knowing of tensions in the area since Friday, the police did not swing into action until late Saturday. On Sunday, under heavy police deployment, some of the affected families visited the locality to measure their losses who are currently living with their relatives elsewhere in the city

Anthony says the government has done almost nothing in response to past attacks on Christians. To date, no one has been convicted in the 2009 attacks on Christians in Gojra that left at least nine dead and dozens of houses destroyed. Similarly, the Muslim cleric who tried to falsely frame a Christian girl of blasphemy last year was ultimately released after being arrested.

Law enforcement authorities say that arrests are being made in connection to this weekend's mob attack.

?We have started the arrests, many have been rounded up but we cannot give exact figures as yet. However, there are 83 people nominated in the case that we have identified to be behind the attack,? says Sajjad Ahmed, a local police officer handling the case.

Local reports suggest more than 100 people have been arrested so far. Besides the arrests, the government has promised to rebuild the burnt down houses and has also announced monetary compensation for the victims.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan has also taken a suo-moto notice of the incident and will hold hearings on the case tomorrow.

But human rights activists criticize these steps as a cosmetic measure and say the government needs to seriously reconsider its policy towards discrimination of minorities instead of having reactionary responses.

?The Punjab government had enough time to act but it woke up after things went out of control,? says Zaman Khan, spokesperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. The reason for the delayed action Mr. Khan adds is the prevalent anti-minority mindset inside the government. ?Even the Pakistani constitution is anti-minority. It does not allow the head of the country to be a non-Muslim.?

The human rights activist slammed the main political parties like the PPP and the PMLN, which are the traditional ruling elite in the country, for always siding with the religious extremists.

?Both these parties woo extremists groups, which ... are a creation of the military?s Islamization policy," says Khan. "[I]nstead of stopping them, mainstream parties have used the groups for their political benefit.?

Khan points to instances where both parties have done so in the past. ?For example, the PPP passed legislation against Ahmadis declaring them non-Muslims during the '70s to get support of the religious parties, and it was [under the PMLN in the '90s that the] mandatory death sentence was introduced for blasphemy law. Also PPP and PMLN leaders in Punjab have been regularly seen attending political gatherings of those with links to [anti-Shiite militant group] Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. It is an open secret."
