Inhabitat's Week in Green: ten earth activities, transnatural stools and wood ash bike frames

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

Image

Happy Earth Day! In honor of Earth Week, this week we took a moment to think about the origins of this now-global event, exploring why we need Earth Day and how our society can possibly tackle the 7 biggest threats to our environment. If haven't yet made plans for Earth day make sure to take a look at our list of 10 Earth Day activities. One of the major themes of Earth Week this year was lighting, as green lighting innovations ranging from the useful to the absurd made it onto Inhabitat's radar screen. On the more practical end of the spectrum, we reviewed the SUNNAN, Ikea's solar-powered desk lamp, and although we found it to be a bit dim, it actually outperformed its expected charge time. On the lighter side, Randy Sarafan, the same guy who designed a chair that tweets his own farts (seriously), unveiled a lamp that shuts off whenever you shut your eyes. The downside: In order for it to work you have to attach electrodes to your face, which are plugged directly into the wall. Thanks, but we'll pass. And for those who prefer regular, old-fashioned lights, Philips launched its much-anticipated L-Prize winning 10-watt LED bulb on Earth Day. At $60 a pop, you might have to take out a second mortgage to replace every bulb in your home, but you'll recoup that money back on your energy bill, and Philips also announced some rebates to ease the pain.

HTC talks smartphone design: from inception to final product

At the Frequencies media summit in Seattle over the last two days, HTC walked us through the fine details on how its smartphones are developed, going from the boring rectangular ABS block to the more refined plastic mockups that are presented to carriers and focus groups -- the findings of which then shape the final product. Sadly, we weren't allowed to take photos of the One X mockups that were shown to us, but do read on to learn the general process of how an HTC phone goes from inception to the final product.

Proper Fitting Shoes Can Improve Your Overall Body Health ...

shoesWhether for fitness, work or play, proper fitting and well-made shoes are essential for foot comfort and foot health. With 25 percent of the body?s bones in the feet, any misalignment can affect the entire body. In addition to foot pain and injury, improper fitting shoes and poorly made shoes can cause knee, hip, back, shoulder and neck problems.

Shoe-In for a Sure-Fit

Width, length, arch support, heel support and cushioning are all important factors that determine a good fitting shoe. According to the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, one out of every six people in the United States has foot problems from poor fitting shoes. This organization also reports that nine out of 10 women have foot deformities as a result of tight fitting shoes. Tight fitting shoes can cause hammertoes, corns, calluses, bunions and other disabling foot problems. Before purchasing shoes, consumers should have their feet measured, as time and circumstances can change the foot?s configuration. The width of a shoe should comfortably accommodate the width of the foot, and the toe box of a shoe should allow for some wiggle room. Consumers are under the myth that shoes need to be broken in to be comfortable, and this is a fallacy. Shoes should feel comfortable right out of the box. If a shoe feels too tight, it is best not to purchase it.

Proper arch support is essential for foot comfort. The arch support in a shoe should rise at the level of the arch for support to the mid foot. If it doesn?t, there are individual insole cups which are molded to fit the arch that can be place inside the shoe for arch support. Proper heel support and cushioning go hand in hand. The inner heel should have enough dense cushioning to reduce the friction caused by movement. Proper heel support will reduce the chances of heel pain and plantar fasciitis.

When to Buy New Shoes

Wearing worn shoes can cause foot problems and replacing worn shoes with a new pair of shoes is important for good foot health. Shoes should be replaced when exhibiting the following:

  • The sole or heel of the shoe shows signs of wearing on either side
  • The heel leans or collapses on either side
  • The inner lining of the shoe is worn and leaves a hole that rubs the foot
  • A hole on the underneath of the sole or heel of the shoe

Allstate Blog: Why Energy-Efficient Home Improvements Might Close ...

While updated kitchens, open floor spaces and beautiful backyards remain at the top of home buyers? wish lists, eco-friendly home features are beginning to make an appearance.

?

We polled Coldwell Banker Real Estate Facebook fans, who are primarily real estate agents, with the question: ?Has a buyer ever asked you about any 'green features' a prospective home may have?? 20 percent responded yes. On coldwellbanker.com, there are currently 129 homes with the term ?eco friendly? in the listing description.

?

Build_Green_Home.jpgClearly, green living is something buyers and sellers are talking about, and we expect that it will continue to grow with time.

?

However, to some homeowners, the idea of going green is fraught with concerns about spending more as first thoughts often turn to the installation of expensive items like solar panels. And, in some cases, they are correct; not all green updates make sense.

?

What buyers will pay for

Before making any improvements, it is important to understand what prospective buyers want and, even more so, what they are willing to spend more on.

?

Buyers value green improvements that make a home healthier, more comfortable and?here?s the kicker?they?re highly interested in upgrades that will save on operating costs.

?

While the average U.S. household spends nearly $1,900 a year on utility bills, water and energy-efficiency are tangible benefits that are easy to measure. In fact, the U.S. Department of Energy says a green home can cut consumers? bills by 25 percent!

?

Buyers might be more willing to spend on an energy-efficient home because they know that they?ll be saving money on operating costs in the long run.

?

Where to start

Energystar.gov is a valuable resource for homeowners and sellers looking to make a start. This website suggests ways of making a home more energy efficient with products and appliances that can help to reduce high energy bills, improve comfort and lessen the environmental impact.

?

Big ticket upgrades, big impact

As much as half of the energy used in your home goes to heating and cooling. An inefficient heating system not only leaves your pockets empty, it leaves your family shaking during the winter months. If a heating system is 25 years or older, it?s time to replace it. And while a high-efficiency furnace with installation could run upwards of $3,000, it?s an update that buyers will appreciate as it isn?t generally a favorite on their ?to do? list when they first move in.

?

Small improvements, still important

There are many other smaller green improvements that, over time, can make a big difference. For instance, installing a programmable thermostat is an inexpensive green improvement that can save up to $150 annually.?

?

Another competitive edge a seller can give their home against other homes on the market is upgrading showerheads, toilets and sinks that are 20 years or older. According to Frontdoor.com, federal standards now require that these fixtures use less water. An upgrade to a low-flow toilet can also trim about $90 a year off a water bill.

?

Energy audit

Prior to putting a home on the market, you might also consider getting your home audited by the HERS Index, a rating system that verifies a building?s energy performance and is recognized by the federal government for tax incentives, mortgage loans and investor certifications. Having a good score on the HERS index can improve the value of your home to green-minded buyers.

?

Of course, there are many other energy-efficient improvements to consider:

?

  • Plant trees near windows to provide shade, reduce the need for interior cooling
  • Replace old light bulbs with ENERGY STAR-qualified bulbs (this can save more than $40 over each bulb?s lifetime)
  • Seal air leaks around windows and doors to prevent energy losses

?

If your home is currently on the market, or if you?re getting ready to put it on the market, it is important to do everything you can to give it a competitive edge. Selecting some, or all, of these eco-friendly home improvements can give buyers peace of mind knowing they won?t have to invest time and money in putting together and operating a more efficient, lower impact, more comfortable home.

Who is the Richest Man in Hip-Hop?

Jay-Z, Diddy and 50 Cent released "I Get Money (The Forbes 1-2-3 Billionaire Remix)" in '07, a celebration of their inclusion atop Forbes Hip-Hop Cash Kings list.

Five years later, the same three artists are in a more exclusive group - the Forbes Five, a list of hip-hop's wealthiest moguls - though no longer 1-2-3 in that order.

Which of the three earns the most? And who else made the Top 5?

DIDDY DIRTY MONEY

Diddy is the closest to becoming a billionaire, with a net worth of $550 million. The Bad Boy Records founder has been a mainstream mainstay for 15 years.

Thanks to his knack for self-promotion and outside business deals with Ciroc vodka, Sean John, Enyce, Blue Flame and other tech startups, he gets money.

A lot of it. And he's not even done. Diddy signed a deal with Comcast to launch cable channel Revolt in 2013. He'll own the channel outright. Cha-ching.

Jay-Z is #2 at $460 million. Unlike his fellow Forbes Five members, he still churns out music and goes on tour, most recently with pal Kanye West.

He sold his Rocawear clothing label for $204 million in 2007, signed a 10-year $150M deal with Live Nation in 2008, and co-owns the New Jersey Nets.

There's also his 40/40 Club chain, his ad firm Translation, cosmetics company Carol's Daughter and other businesses too numerous to list. Very rich.

Dr. Dre ranks third with $270 million, boosted by the sale of a 51% stake in Beats Electronics - a company he founded with Jimmy Iovine - to HTC.

Sources say each owned a third of the company before the deal, placing Dre's cut at $85 million after taxes. Not a bad addition to his net worth.

Birdman, surprisingly clocks in at No. 4 with a fortune of $125 million. He cofounded Cash Money Records with brother Ronald "Slim" Williams.

The label's value soared with the success of rappers Drake, Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne (who shares ownership of sub-label Young Money). That'll do it.

50 Cent and his $110 million rank fifth. The business-savvy Queens-born rapper earned $100 million for his Vitaminwater stake alone in 2007.

Fiddy also made tens of millions from touring, record sales and clothing, but spends freely on cars and renovations to his mansion in Connecticut.

Still, a nice nine-figure cushion remains from his back catalog, acting gigs and 50 Cent themed videogames, shoes and books, and headphone line SMS.

iKamasutra: A Tale Of Sex, Love, And Apple App Store Rejection

apple_afterI've seen plenty of apps get yanked from Apple's App Store in my day, but the news of an app called iKamasutra getting that same treatment really has me scratching my head. I won't rehash the entire story, but here's the gist of what happened: Apple pulled the iKamasutra from the App Store in February, and after a bit of sleuthing, creator Naim Cesur of NBITE managed to contact someone in Apple's verification department. According to that Apple employee, the app was removed because of a suggestive app icon and a preponderance of detail in the images used (including the use of brown hair). Cesur and his team dutifully updated the apps with a revamped icon and less detailed imagery, and resubmitted it. And then they waited.

Health or wealth?

You've disturbed a leprechaun and, as is traditional, he's now offering you a wish. In this case, though, you don't have freedom to choose whatever you want, you can only pick from the two options he's offering.

The first option is financial security for the rest of your life. You won't necessarily be up there with Bill Gates or Warren Buffett, but you'll definitely be in the top 10% of wealth in your country. More importantly, you can be certain that whatever happens, you'll never be short of money - so if something goes horribly wrong, such as your house burning down or your car being wrecked, you'll always have the money to replace it. And if you make good use of the wealth that the leprechaun grants you, investing wisely and taking care of what you spend, then you do have the potential to be very wealthy indeed.

The second option is a healthy body and mind for the rest of your life. Again, there's no guarantee that you won't catch the occasional cold or flu, and the leprechaun won't protect you from accidental injury. And, frankly, he isn't going to protect you from the consequences of your own stupidity if you eat or drink too much or fill your body with drugs. But what he can do is ensure that all the parts of your body are in good working order, including your immune system, so if you take reasonable care of your fitness and avoid accidents you can expect to live to reach 100 without any problems and you'll still be active and alert right up to the point at which your body finally wears out.

So, which will you choose? There aren't any other options, since the leprechaun isn't offering any. If you really don't want either then you can simply abstain from choosing.

A seat at history's counter in Greensboro, N.C.

The Woolworth lunch counter where students protested against desegregation in 1960 recently became the International Civil Rights Center & Museum.

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

It all started here at the Woolworth lunch counter. But this cradle of student protests against desegregation in Greensboro, N.C., was not always given the same stature as the civil rights movement landmarks of Memphis, Tenn., and Selma and Montgomery, Ala., when historians described the sea change that shaped the new South.

But 50 years after the Feb. 1, 1960, sit-in, the site was rechristened in 2010 as the International Civil Rights Center & Museum, securing a place in history for the African-American college students, ?the Greensboro Four,? who refused to cede their seats at the whites-only counter.??

?I?m proud of the museum,? says Greensboro resident Ian Pawlowski, a 30-something who grew up when the city was still reeling from deadly Ku Klux Klan shootings. His family fought on both sides of the Civil War, but Mr. Pawlowski says that today the city is demographically and culturally mixed.

How The Pebble Smart Watch Hit $2 Million On Kickstarter [Q&A]

pebbleThe Pebble smart watch - a clever little device that connects to your iPhone or Android device and, oddly enough, tells the time - was a twinkle in the eye of founder Eric Migicovsky just a few weeks ago. Now the product has reached $2 million in funding. And if that weren't enough, InPulse, the company that makes the Pebble, only ever asked for $100,000 over the course of the entire project. It's not only a testament to the watch itself, which from what I've seen is pretty damn cool, but a testament to the power of Kickstarter and crowd-funding in general. We decided to have a little chat with Mr. Migicovsky to figure out how this incredible success story came to be. Here's what we learned:

Ridge Racer Unbounded

The Ridge Racer series may not carry Gran Turismo or Forza Motorsport's swagger, but the long-running franchise has a dedicated fan base that loves the drift-centric racing action. The latest series entry (developed by Bugbear Entertainment, which developed the FlatOut stunt-racing series), attempts to bring a new chaotic element to the familiar gameplay by adding environmental and vehicular destruction as players race for street cred in the fictional Shatter Bay. The story is something you can flat out ignore?it's a racing game, after all?but the driving action is interesting and varied. Just play against human opponents if you wish to maintain your sanity. I reviewed the $49.99 PC version; Ridge Racer Unbounded is also available on the PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms for the same price.

I Can't Drive 55
Ridge Racer Unbounded has a great sense of speed. Some games, such as those in the Burnout franchise, almost move too quickly, which results in drivers too often overshooting targets or smashing into walls. I always felt in full control here. That said, you will likely have great difficulty competing with the enemy AI, which manages to drive near-flawlessly. This intensifies each mistake you make, and adds unneeded stress to the game, detracting somewhat from the fun.

Ridge Racer Unbounded features a varied car selection that ranges from ultra-sleek sports cars to powerful vintage muscle cars, each with different speed, acceleration, handling, strength, and drifting capabilities. These cars are , of course, unlicensed as they get absolutely wrecked as you bulldoze your way through the city?vehicle manufacturers aren't too keen on seeing their luxury rides decimated in video game form.

The cars are gorgeous, as are the dense urban environments in which they race. Shatter Bay's many districts are high-detailed and destructible locations (with some beautiful lighting effects) that just entice you to race one more match. When you fire up Ridge Racer Unbounded, you can only select one car and race district, but others are unlocked as you accumulate collateral damage points. These points are gathered by plowing through anything other than a solid brick wall.

There are, however, a few highlighted structures that you wouldn't normally plow through?such as the aforementioned brick walls?until you build your Power meter, which acts as a speed boost (with cool accompanying light trails). Not only can you do big damage to the environment (and score big points) by blazing through stores to reveal alternate routes or ramps, but you can also knock other cars off the road in dramatic fashion ("frags"), Burnout style. Frags?along with catching big air (sometimes off rooftops!) and destroying structures?give you additional Power meter points.

Who's Going To Drive You Home?
City Creator, a new feature to the series, lets players design, and name tracks. An easy-to-use in-game tool lets you drop track sections on a grid, and then populate the track with ramps, sand traps, and other obstacles. I encountered some truly creative tracks, especially Hellbent666, which had ramps and obstacles everywhere?as well as many an explosion opportunity.

A number of options let you select the race style (Frag Attack, Domination, and more), the time of day, number of cars, vehicle class, and more. After creating your city, you can share online. The one downside here is that you can't upload a track until you've built six racing events within your city. That was a bummer.

An Interstate Love Song
Ridge Racer Unbounded is a new direction for the franchise?one that is much welcomed. It may obviously crib from other successful games, but it's fast, controls well, and features fun environmental destruction. If you've steered away from Ridge Racer in the past, give Unbounded a spin.

Sennheiser intros ritzy IE 800 headphones and HDVD 800 amp, your wallet screams

Image
You thought Sennheiser had already done enough to appease audiophiles this year at CES? Think again. The company has announced yet another new set of headphones with an amp to keep it warm at night, but the high-end wares come at a high-end price. The ceramic IE 800 buds (€599 or $787) offer a broad 5 - 46,000 Hz audio range in spite of their mere 7mm drivers, while stainless steel vents on the back supposedly "improve bass and airflow." If you need some extra juice and don't mind forking over the premium €1,499 ($1,973), the HDVD 800 headphone amp's shell is rocking anodized aluminum and a glass window for peering at the bantam circuitry within -- way over the top, but also, pretty amazing. It supports 24-bit 192kHz sources and is engineered for ideal synergy with Senn's HD 800, HD 700, HD 650 and HD 600. Both should hit the shelves by summer of this year.
