GWH News and Notes: Carolina Wrestling News & Notes

From Jeff Richards:

Gibsonville, NC was a busy place for wrestlers and wrestling fans alike last weekend (5/3-4). With CHIKARA invading on Friday night, the normal inhabitant of the Sportatorium, CWF Mid Atlantic, ran its show Saturday. No titles changed hands, as the Goon Squad (tag champs), Trevor Lee (TV champ) and Arik Royal (heavyweight champ) retained their championships. It reminded me of earlier in the 21st century when NWA Wildside ran on both Friday and Saturday nights (for a while) in Cornelia, GA. Doubling up on nights in the same town is a successful tactic used by Ring of Honor, SHIMMER, and many other organizations.

East Coast Pro Wrestling (ECPW) has relaunched according to indyinsiders.com. The group has started a tag team title tournament and already crowned a new heavyweight champion: Ric Converse. ECPW's next show is scheduled for June 22nd at the Thomasville (NC) Armory. The group uses a lot of CWF Mid Atlantic talent.

Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling (MACW) has cancelled its last show of the school year. That event was to be held in Easley, SC on May 18th. MACW is looking to expand into both Tennessee and Georgia come next fall.

Rick Michaels, former Trans-South Wrestling (TSW) Champion, took a date in Mt. Zion, GA on 5/4 instead of dropping the belt in Union, SC. Michaels (Raymond Rawls) was set to defend unsuccessfully against Deon Johnson in a title vs. career match. George South Sr. stepped in to do the job instead. The afternoon for TSW was highlighted by Tom Prichard's seminar, and that evening Prichard put over youngster Alex Averignos in a match.

Chad Byrd's NAWA will feature Gunner, Ricky Morton and more on 5/11 in Hudson, NC. Gunner was originally booked on the 11th in Marion, NC for Revolutionary Wrestling Alliance (RWA), but before that show was cancelled, Gunner's appearance was deemed questionable. Gunner's weekend bookings included 5/10 in Mountain City, TN.

New Millenium is the name of an upstart promotion taping for television in Kings Mountain, NC. The group has been taping matches at the National Guard Armory in Kings Mountain for future broadcast on WHKY-TV in Hickory (NC). Its first two shows featured no names, but South was booked for its third taping on 5/10.

Hate to end with some sad news, but Pro Wrestling EVO's Zack Salvation recently announced his retirement from wrestling. Salvation, a former booker for APW in SC and last champion of record for EVO, has been battling Bells Palsy. This young man has thrilled indy fans in both Columbia and Charlotte for years. Salvation wrestled Blue Demon Jr. for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship on a Greg Price NWA New Beginnings show. He will be missed.
