I see business owners not being introspective and not making ...

***

I see it everyday, business that have the same or less sales year after year or that struggle to make a profit. Sometimes a business gets lucky and they pick an industry that is growing and other times, owners were smart enough that they thought of a unique service or product were there are few competitors so their company does great with not much change management.?From what I have seen, companies and business owners that are struggling often?are not?looking closely at what the real problems are and are not making any changes. They just keep doing the same old routines and habits.

What gives me the credibility to say that? I look at my own companies analytically and that I change my routines and habits to improve performance? First, experience. Over the last 20 years and 7 companies, all of my companies have been profitable. Second, consistency. In my opinion, anyone can get lucky once but show me someone who has success over a long period of time, and that tells me if their someone to pay attention to. Even Bill Gates has said?he was in?the?right place at the right time (If it were not for microsoft, no?matter what Gates did, he would have been successful? maybe not just a trillionaire) . Now, I haven?t built a huge company yet, but?I do feel that I am a good entrepreneur that looks at things very closely and isn?t afraid to make changes.

When I look at my businesses and I see other businesses, I can see that one of the keys is that not only?are successful business owners?constantly willing to make changes but they are?constantly looking at why?their companies?are not performing well.?Successful business owners?do a good job of identifying what?their problems are and then put a plan in place that is fully executed.

So many business owners I know just don?t do this. They keep the same routines, the same processes, the same approaches, the same people and they refuse to look deeply into their business to make tough decisions.

Part of the reason why I think business owners are like this is because they put themselves in a financial position were they can?t afford to make a change. They limit themselves because they have to make a certain amount to pay for that expensive house, luxury car, etc., they have to keep their people because they are too fearful of letting people go,? and they don?t make changes because they are too afraid of making a mistake.

I noticed this recently because a business guy I know really well for 8 years continues to make the same mistake over and over again without looking closely at what the true problem is and then making the hard choices by trying something different. It made me look closer at the habits I have developed to enbrace change and I think that has made all the difference in the world in my success.
