Although the Hendrix men lost a tough one at the wire Sunday afternoon, both teams enter the inaugural Southern Athletic Association tournaments this weekend on a bit of a roll.
Both teams will have six seeds in the tournaments that will be played on the home courts of the men?s and women?s regular-season champion.
The men?s tournament will be at Centre College in Danville, Ky. The women?s tournament will be at Millsaps in Jackson, Miss.
MEN: The Warriors handed league champion Centre a defeat Friday, forcing a tiebreaker between Centre and Rhodes to determine the host for the tournament. The Warriors (8-17, 3-11) then took one of the other top teams in the league (Sewanee,) down to the wire before losing, 73-69, in overtime.
A 3-point basket and two free throws by Leo Born in the final 18.5 seconds of overtime proved decisive for the Tigers, who overcame a 20-8 advantage by the Warriors in points off turnovers.
Jaren Riley, playing his final game on Cliff Garrison Court, led the Warriors with 23 points.
Hendrix will play third-seeded Birmingham-Southern in the first round of the men?s tournament at 7 p.m. Friday in Danville, Ky. The winner will play either Rhodes or Millsaps in Saturday afternoon?s semifinals.
Centre swept Rhodes to gain the No. 1 seed. Sewanee won a coin flip over Oglethorpe for the fourth seed.
WOMEN: After losing their first 18 games, the Hendrix women won three of their last four, the latest a 51-58 victory over Sewanee (6-18, 0-14).
The Warriors (4-21, 4-10) will take on Centre, the team that defeated them 78-56 Friday at Grove Gymnasium, at 8 p.m. Friday at Jackson, Miss. The winner will play Rhodes or Oglethorpe on Saturday.
Katie Coughran hit a basket with 1:51 left, and after an exchange of missed opportunities, Caitlyn Kriesel-Bigler hit two free throws with sis seconds left to clinch the victory over the Tigers.
UCA
After the University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bears broke a five-game losing streak by knocking Sam Houston State out of the league lead, they?ll take on the new leaders Tuesday night on the road.
The Sugar Bears (14-11, 7-7 Southland) have a quick turnaround in playing travel partner Oral Roberts at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Tulsa, Okla.
The ORU women (13-11) are 10-4 in the Southland with a half-game lead over Sam Houston State and Lamar. The UCA women are in sixth place, a game ahead of Stephen F. Austin.
The UCA men (9-15, 4-10) , which have lost four in a row, have a tough task against the Golden Eagles, who are 16-10, 11-3 and stand third in the league. That game will begin at 7:30 p.m.
CBC WOMEN
Central Baptist College?s Lady Mustangs swept Haskell Indian Nation University and Central Christian College on their homecoming weekend Saturday at A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse.
CBC downed Haskell, 54-48. Alyssa Drake led with 23 points and added three assists to go along with TaQuila Hunt?s three. Abbi Stearns had 14 rebounds.
Stearns had 18 points and 11 rebounds in the 74-60 victory over Central Christian. Hunt had seven assists and four steals.
Earlier in the week, the Lady Mustangs lost, 81-44, to College of the Ozarks. Kayla Gardner led with 17 points, eight reobunds and four steals. Stearns had two assists.
