Business Travel Expenses: Where Employees Are Spending the ...

In 2012, spending on business travel rose one percent over the course of 12 months. According to Certify, a cloud travel and expense management software company from Portland, Maine, the average monthly expense report hovered around $900.

What exactly were employees racking up receipts on?

Well, there?s the obvious ? airlines, hotels and rental car services ? in which Delta, Hilton and National took the top three most expense companies in each category, respectively.

But what is most intriguing about this study is the restaurants that were expensed (see slideshow below). From coffee to burgers, business travelers certainly kept fueled, but not in the way you would imagine.

I don?t travel for my job, but if I did, I definitely wouldn?t be eating at McDonald?s on my employer?s dime. There is already enough that sucks about business travel ? redeye flights, long meetings, time away from home ? that I wouldn?t want to further the suckiness by eating crappy fast food.

According to a 2011 study?in the?Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, those who travel the most frequently have higher rates of obesity and lower self-rated health than those who travel less frequently. Yikes.

Yes, McDonald?s is quick, easy and familiar in a city far away from home. But I?d sooner scour Yelp to find a local restaurant with a healthy dish of salmon and rice than scarf down a Big Mac because it can be bought from a drive-thru.

Will 2013 be the year expense reports change to reflect all those New Year?s resolutions for healthy eating? My guess is that French fries are just too good to pass up while on the road.
