Australia v Sri Lanka ? 3rd Test ? Live Cricket Score and Match Update ? Dimuth Karunaratne leads Sri Lanka forward

An unbeaten century from Matthew Wade enabled Australia to gain a 138-run lead before they declared at a first innings total of 432 ? however, Sri Lanka put forth a strong reply, with opening batsman Dimuth Karunaratne leading the team forward, and getting them up to 130 for 1 by tea on the third day of their third Test match ? trailing by 8 runs, with 9 wickets remaining in their second innings, at the Sydney Cricket Ground today on January 5.

Jackson Bird (19.4-10-41-4), Mitchell Starc (19-0-71-3), and Peter Siddle (15-3-46-2) ensured that Sri Lanka did not exceed a first innings total of 294, bowling them out on the first day of play. The hosts then went on to solidify their dominant stance further, with David Warner (85), Phillip Hughes (87), and skipper Michael Clarke (50) laying a steady foundation. Australia eventually finished at 342 for 6 by stumps.

The third day saw Matthew Wade extending the home team?s lead in a major way, and smashing an unbeaten 102. Mitchell Johnson (13) and Peter Siddle (38) both chipped in with small contributions, but Nuwan Pradeep (20-1-114-2) and Rangana Herath (31-3-95-4) managed to make significant dents in the opposition?s batting order, and Australia eventually declared at 432 for 9, with a 138-run lead.

Sri Lanka stepped up to bat in their second innings, and after the drubbing they had received at the hands of the Aussie pace attack in their first innings, the hosts appeared to have a significant upper-hand.

However, the tourists received inspiration in the performance of opening batsman Dimuth Karunaratne (83*), who anchored the innings at the top and got his team off to a promising start. His fellow opener Tillakaratne Dilshan was unable to join him at the crease for long, and ended up caught out by Phillip Hughes at third slip off Mitchell Johnson in the 7th over, after a mere 5-run contribution.

Skipper Mahela Jayawardene (38*) was the next batsman to step up to the crease, and joined Karunaratne for a solid partnership. Together, both batsmen swiftly worked towards eradicating Australia?s lead, and got the team up to 130 for 1 by tea ? trailing by just 8 runs, with 9 wickets still in hand.
