Internal Revenue Service agents, backed by numerous officers from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, raided Gulf Internet Services in Tavernier Wednesday morning.
Though visibly marketing itself as a fee-for-Internet use business that offers copy, faxing and printing services, Gulf Internet also offers slot machine-like gambling. The Tavernier office had more than 60 computers linked to online slot games.
Search warrants were issued Monday for 51 internet cafe locations in Florida and elsewhere linked to Allied Veterans of the World, a non-profit that operates the cafes. Warrants were issued for Gulf Internet's locations in Marathon and Stock Island, as well as in Tavernier.
The raid came hours before Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and officials from other state and federal agencies planned to hold a press conference to discuss the status of an investigation into Allied Veterans of the World.
Florida Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carrol resigned Monday, the same day FDLE officers interviewed her about her involvement with Allied Veterans of the World.
