China earthquake reportedly kills 75, collapses many homes

Chinese state media are reporting this morning that at least 75 people were killed and nearly 300 injured after a 6.6 magnitude earthquake shook western China.

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck central China on Monday, reportedly killing at least 75 people and collapsing many homes.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit in Gansu province about eight miles east of Chabu at 7:45 a.m. Beijing time (7:45 p.m. ET Sunday). The USGS recorded it at 6 miles deep and said it caused shaking in a rural region where the infrastructure isn't seismically resistant.

State news agency Xinhua said the death toll had risen to 75. It put the number of people injured at 600.?

Photos posted on Chinese social media showed roads on the sides of riverbanks that had subsided and farmhouses reduced to piles of red bricks, Reuters reported.

"Many have been injured by collapsed houses," a doctor surnamed Du told Reuters.

The official China Meteorological Administration warned that heavy rain was possible in southeastern Gansu province Monday night and into Tuesday. It said the rain could hamper rescue efforts and urged residents to be alert to flash flooding in areas damaged by the earthquake.

About 5,600 residential buildings were damaged, the Beijing-based China Daily newspaper reported Monday afternoon. Some train service was suspended, and hundreds of armed police were mobilized to repair a damaged part of the main highway linking Lanzhou, the provincial capital, to Minxian county, it reported.

Xinhua said the quake was felt in the neighboring cities of Dingxi, Longnan and Tianshui, as well as Lanzhou, more than 100 miles away. About 19,000 people live in the area that was subject to the strongest shaking, it said.

The quake was followed an hour and a half later by a 5.6-magnitude quake at about the same depth,?the USGS reported.

Based on the history of earthquakes of this size in rural China, there could be "significant casualties," the USGS said.

Gansu abuts Sichuan province, where a 6.6 quake in April killed 164 people and injured more than 6,700, China's worst quake in three years.

49-year-old Austin wins Sanderson Farms playoff

MADISON, Miss. (AP) ? Woody Austin won the Sanderson Farms Classic on Sunday for his first PGA Tour victory since 2007, beating Cameron Beckman and Daniel Summerhays with an 8-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a playoff.

The 49-year-old Austin is the eighth oldest winner in PGA Tour history and the oldest since Fred Funk won at 50 in 2007.

Austin came into the final round two shots behind Summerhays and Nicholas Thompson, but made up ground with a 5-under 67 to finish at 20-under 268. Beckman and Summerhays both birdied No. 18 to match Austin, and Beckman missed a 5-foot putt that would have forced a second playoff hole.

Beckman shot 67, and Summerhays had a 69.

Austin was making his fourth PGA Tour start of the year. He has four career victories.

Summerhays and Thompson started the day tied for the lead, two shots ahead the pack.

But Thompson fell out of contention quickly with a double bogey on No. 5 and a bogey on No. 8. He finished fourth at 18 under, two shots back after a 71. Summerhays moved into the lead with a birdie on No. 9, but made bogey on 14 and fell behind until making birdies on both Nos. 17 and 18.

It was the second straight week Summerhays failed to close a tournament after having at least a share of the lead on the final day. His drive on the playoff hole ? the 5,532-yard, par-5 18th ? found the bunker on the right side of the fairway and he hit into the water on his second shot.

He tied for fourth the week before at the John Deere, a stroke out of a playoff after bogeying the final hole.

Austin wasn't the only veteran making a move on the final day.

Beckman, a 43-year-old, recovered from a 72 in the opening round to post a 64, 65 and 67 in the final three rounds. He was tied for the lead at various times Sunday. He drilled an impressive 15-foot birdie putt to force the playoff, but his 5-foot putt on the playoff hole missed to the right.

Billy Andrade charged up the leaderboard with a 65 to tie for fifth at 17 under. The 49-year-old started the day seven shots off the lead but climbed quickly by shooting 7 under through his first 11 holes. He finished with seven straight pars.

It was the first day of the tournament that didn't involve a weather delay. But there was plenty of heat and humidity ? as well as some wind for the first time all week ? as players dealt with a soft course that received more than an inch of rain overnight.

ABOARD A MILITARY AIRCRAFT, July 20, 2013 ? Deputy Defense Secretary Ash Carter began a weeklong trip today that will take him first to Israel and then to Uganda and Ethiopia in sub-Saharan Africa.

During Carter?s first official trip to Israel as deputy secretary, he will meet with senior Israeli defense officials to discuss issues of mutual strategic importance and reaffirm the U.S. commitment to the relationship between the United States and Israel.

While in Israel, Carter will meet with Defense Minister Moshe "Bogie" Ya'alon, Deputy Defense Minister Amos Gilad and National Security Adviser Yaakov Amidror, and attend an official dinner hosted by Ehud Shani, director-general of the Ministry of Defense.

After leaving Israel, Carter will stop briefly in Uganda to meet with senior Ugandan government and defense officials. The deputy secretary will thank the Ugandans for their continued commitment in maintaining and improving security in the region.

From Uganda, Carter will travel to Ethiopia to meet with Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegu and senior defense officials to discuss issues of mutual importance. The deputy secretary also will thank the Ethiopians for the positive and important security role they continue to play in the region.

Report: Florida national parks among 'sexiest' in America

Florida's got a pretty good batting average for hitting a home run, at least when it comes to going all the way in a national park.

Two of the state's three national parks made the 10 Sexiest National Parks in America list compiled by MissTravel.com, a travel and dating site.

And by sexy, it means parks in which the members of the website community have done the deed.

At the top of the list is Zion National Park in Utah, but coming in right behind is Dry Tortugas National Park, to the west of the Florida Keys. Also in the top 10 is Biscayne National Park near Miami coming in at lucky No. 7.

"I've actually been to Dry Tortugas, twice (though not under these circumstances)," said MissTravel.com spokesperson Jennifer Gwynn. And though it is fairly small, there were times when I didn't see another soul on the beach, so I definitely think it is possible to be alone with someone you care about."

The poll of 8,500 single travelers showed that 21 percent, or more than one in five, had held their own congress so to speak while in a national park.

The only Florida park not on the list, with only two members of those polled having braved the elements, is Everglades National Park.

"Unfortunately for the Everglades, they are ranked the second least 'sexy' park in America," Gwynn said. "I can attest that a sweaty, romp in the swamp is not at the top of many travelers 'to do' lists. I am going to hope that the two people who reported committing sexual indiscretions in the Everglades, some how did so comfortably indoors."

The other least "sexy" park was Yellowstone National Park.
